Photo Reference FAQ

Use this checklist to help provide the best photo reference for your portrait commission

  • Make sure your photo is in focus (not blurry)

  • Take your photo in good natural light - ideally, the light should be coming from the side (rather than from the front or from behind)

  • When you take the photo, step back a little and take it from the subject’s eye level. (Too close, and the features may look distorted)

  • Frame the subject well - at least head and shoulders in frame fully

  • Facing the camera or in 3/4 view, although sometimes a subject in profile can be quite striking.
